bought a pair and sizing is off. Normally buy the model 7166 ( which has been discontinued)at an 8 wide and always fit perfectly with enough room for thick socks and a liner(insole) with more cushing. Bought 8 wide in the st elias and its liner went flat as paper in first 25 miles of a 10 day 132 mile backpacking hike. There was no room for a differnt insole ( liner). Plus the angle from the toe to outside of boot is narrow. Toes took a real beating. Exchanged them for a different boot. The shoelaces broke at 57 miles. Changed to para cord. When exchanging them had to go to 9 wide to have enough room. The boot did great on water crossings and rain. Construction was great also.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Freddie55 Great to be back on the trail
After many years out of the backpacking/hiking habit I fell back on an old favorite, Vasque, to meet my footwear needs. After trying several options at my local outfitter I found the St Elias to be my favorite. They felt comfortable and secure right out of the box. Probably a bit of nostalgia too. If you are reading this review as part of your purchase decision making, please take note of the negatives in the other reviews. Ticky tack stuff about laces. I've had mine for a year with plenty of miles and no problems. The rest are probably related to poor fit or inadequate break-in. I would say these boots took a long time to break-in. Many hikes of increasing length, varying terrain and sometimes pain mostly caused by pressure points. Realize they are fairly rigid compared to the mesh style boots and the leather is going to need some sweat and time to form to the shape of your foot, or in my case boney ankles. That being said, these boots have gotten me through the SoCal 6-pack and I just returned from a 12 day Sierra backpack putting many miles on my boots over some tough terrain. Nothing but praise, never a problem with my feet. With diligence and patience these boots will not disappoint you.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Rick Rugged and comfortable
After a winter of snowshoeing and hiking with my first Vasque boots (ultradry Snow Junkie) I got a pair of St Elias. With about two weeks of urban break-in use, I used them for a week of hiking in Shenandoah. The quality, comfortableness, and ruggedness of these boots is very high and I was very satisfied. I waterproofed them with Snow Seal and they held up very well including one very wet day with several wide stream fordings. Yes they did finally get soaked that day but I think that was from water over the top.
One question for Vasques: My right foot is a tad shorter than my left. Never noticed a difference with the Snow Junkie but sometimes do with the St Elias - perhaps they run a little longer? Any suggestions on how to address this ? With the right sock combination its usually fine but I wonder if there is an insert or something that might help with lighter socks.

These shoes look great! And are truly water proof. They felt great too when I first put them on. I broke them in on serval short(5mi) hikes (without a backpack). I'm now getting into backpacking and have been training with a light pack and more difficult terrain. By the end of a steep incline/decline 7 mile hike my feet were absolutely killing me. My toes hurt, the balls of my feet hurt, and I had blisters on my heels. A week later, tried again, 5 mile (steep incline/decline) hike and same thing... PAIN! (With a liner and a mid-weight merino wool socks). SO SAD, because I have my first backpacking trip in exactly one week and don't know what I am going to do about my shoes!

My feet have never been this happy. I tried them on 3 different times before buying them to be sure. My god, the first day I got them I only took them off to sleep. I didn't know being in love with a pair of shoes was actually possible.
I'll be taking them on a 6 month to year-long backpacking trip to India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam , so we'll see how they do! I'll check back in and probably have a lot more to say later about their performance for long trips!

by KatiBee82 I'm Flying Up the Hill
I just bought these shoes in January. In a month, I have put around 40 miles on them, hiking especially my local East Bay Hills park. When I tried them on, I also tried on several other brands/models. These were the ONLY ones that fit perfectly not only while walking, but while on REI's little fake hill thing. No rolling here--no ankle twists even if I try. The boot is sturdy, grippy, and supportive. The day I bought them, I took them up to my favorite trail and flew up the hill. My old Solomon trail runners, various running shoes, and even Converse/Vans had been up that hill. I then realized that my old shoes had been pacing me, because I had no grip or stability.
The same trail I now go on with the shoes broken in. I never experienced blisters--just hot spots on my toes due to my gait I suppose, for the first couple hikes. Now, my feet don't even hurt, much less have any hot spots. As one reviewer said, my toes feel like they are in a little apartment. But not in a slippy way. Since these are waterproof, that of course means they don't breathe (duh), but some nice wool socks keep your feet comfy. I hope these last a long time, because I love them.

This boot fits me like a glove! I have not had a chance to wear them outside yet but I have no doubt they will perform beautifully.

Loved these boots for hiking. Used them in all types of weather and locations from hiking in subzero weather in the snow to deep jungle and tropical rain forests. I would have recommended them to anyone until I took a couple month military deployment and left them packed in my closet. On returning I broke out my boots and noticed the soles were split completely through. The uppers are incredible and perfect for the types of terrain I hike. If only they had better soles.
