SOLE

Vasque’s proprietary Vibram® Frontier sole is molded with XSTrek compound and is designed to minimize rubber without sacrificing traction, for an exceptionally light sole. The A.S.E. midsole has the lightness of EVA with the durability and abrasion resistance of polyurethane. Conformable EVA pods in the heel and forefoot deliver running shoe-like comfort as well as allowing the outsole to conform around irregularities in the trail. The sole system was designed to maximize efficiency of walking gait and user comfort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I am beyond impressed with these boots! Bought them last April for tree planting and they were wonderful. Incredibly durable and the waterproofing is great. I never sprayed them with any extra water proofing and my feet never got soaked through. These boots did not puncture from slipping on sharp logs or rocks as some of my previous boots have. I wore these boots 8-9 hours a day in rough terrain and they were comfortable the whole time. (Not one blister!) Other planters were returning or buying new boots almost every month which is not unusual so I was pumped I had found such a great boot and I told all my fellow planters about them! I usually wear a size 8 street shoe but my feet are a bit wide and I wanted space for wool socks so I bought an 8.5 and they were perfect. Really great product, I will definitely buy again!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So Squeeky! I've had my vasques for a year and a half now and I'm almost ready to give up on them. They're my first serious hiking boots (I used to hike in timberland teddy's all the time, and can kill a pair in a year). Shortly after I bought them they developed a mean squeek from the tongue rubbing on the sides when they're tied up. I thought this might go away, but it didn't (I'm trying beeswax on them, but I'm not sure thats made things much better). As far as the fit goes, I can wear them day to day, and stand in them just fine, but if I go on 5-10km hike I need to account for a couple day healing time for my feet after. If I tie the ankles super tight I can save my feet a bit from sliding forward and wrecking my toes, but then that doesn't help the weird hard spot where my pinky toe is thats caused by the seam on the outside of the boot... I thought I was making a good investment, but maybe I should have just stuck to killing teddys...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wore Mine Every Day For Work Outside I'm an archaeologist and work outside everyday. On surveys or excavations I'm putting in a lot of outdoor hours on my boots. Most boots don't last a year but these lasted me almost three or so years. They would have lasted longer but I got a hole in the right boot where the leather tore from something I walked over at work. Even with that hole theyve held up impressively well. I am most impressed by how dry these kept my feet and if they did get wet from walking through a river or from a downpour they dried relatively quick. I would get some arch pain but inserts cured that for me. The laces they come with are kind of terrible and won't stay tied. I suggest buying a pack of waxed laces. I use those and they stay tied all day. I wanted to try a new pair of work boots/hiking boots but unfortunately there still isn't the same supply of women's work boots as there are men's. I'd buy men's but they don't make them small enough. Women work outside and need reliable boots for tough terrain, why isn't there a supply for us? I want to see more composite and/or steel toe, high ankle lace up, and waterproof boots for working women. Why not just make boots for feet and not a gender?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not good for the long haul At first I LOVED these boots. I still really want to love these boots, but they hurt my feet.. I've had other Vasque boots and loved them, but these are not working out. I had them "professionally fitted" at my local EMS store (size 7.5), even bought the "superfeet" inserts (bit of a high arch) to have an option and these boots HURT my feet after ~3 miles , with or without inserts. I recognize not all shoes fit everyone- I tried breaking these in on a 5 -6 mile hike before a LONG hike &backpacking trip in the White Mountains. I wore them anyway on my long trip and really regretted it. My pinkie toes and area between my big & 2nd toe cramp after about 3 miles. My feet feel fatigued and crampy each time I try. Again I recognize this may be a fitting issue, but am bummed as I had them fitted and they just don't feel good to walk long distances in which is what I bought them for and have only worn them a handful of times since. They are durable and supportive, but I hesitate to recommend them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable! My St. Elias boots were perfect from day 1! I was concerned about having to break in a new pair of hiking boots, but not the case here. Comfortable and supportive. I Love these boots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing Boot, bad laces By far the most comfortable hiking boots I've ever owned to date. As I hike a minimum of 20 miles a week with my job, these boots came highly recommended. It took no time to break them in and I have never once received a blister during my use! The only thing holding them back from a 5 star rating and perfect quality is that I blow through a pair of laces once a month, which I've never had a problem with previous to owning these boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect backpacking boots I ordered the St. Elias less than a week before leaving for a 100+ mile backpacking trip through the Chilean Patagonia. Needless to say, I had no time to break them in, so I was expecting a slew of blisters. Despite some minor hot spots, not a single blister formed thoughout the trip. These shoes carried me (and my 40 pound pack) dryly through rivers and deep mud, gave me stability over rocky, uneven, and steep terrain, and provided traction on icy, slippery slopes in Patagonian-force winds. I'd even venture so far as to say that they saved my life a couple of times. I had minor aches and pains on a 23-mile day, and by the end of the trip my heels were killing me, but on such demanding trails that I admittedly hadn't adequately prepared for, the St. Elias were nothing less than amazing. These boots have quickly become my most prized piece of backpacking gear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Narrow but sturdy and comfortable I just went on my first walk with these to break them in more after walking with them around the apartment for a while. In my apartment they felt great- roomy in the toes, comfortable. But then I wore them on a short flattish trail walking (1 hour), and blisters were forming on the outsides of my pinky toes. I'm not sure if maybe they run too narrow for me but I've never considered myself to have wide feet. I may just need to break them in more but these quick-forming blisters are not promising. I considered that maybe I should get a half-size bigger but when I was going down hill in these the top of my toes feel comfortable and perfect - it's just the sides of my feet at the pinky toes that hurt. Otherwise, stability and torsion are great; ankle support is superb and the breathable leather makes them comfortable. I hope the pinky toe problem is a matter of requiring more breaking in, but wondering if I should replace them for a wide version.
