Congratulations to Yasuaki Funada, a Japanese light-weight through-hiker who arrived in Katahdin, Maine on June 27, marking the end of his trek up the Appalachian Trail. Having previously completed both the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), Funada is the first Japanese to have achieved the Triple Crown of American hikes! All of this, and amazingly he is only in his early 20s.
Funada is a minimalist hiker and makes his own super light weight packs and jackets! But he trusts his feet to Vasque shoes and Darn Tough Vermont socks. Mr. Funada also enjoyed some cozy Ibex clothing on his journey.
Although he just completed the Triple Crown, he is still eager to walk the IAT (International Appalachian Trail), which starts from Main’s AT north border to Quebec about, 1,100km. The total through-hiked distance would be 4,600km long! (That’s 2,858 miles for us Americans).
Here’s Funada’s Gear List: Vasque:
Blur SL – He’s been wearing this trail running shoes as light weight fast hiking shoe. Darn Tough:
Hike/Trek 1/4 mesh – He’s been changing to a new pair every 600 miles(about 1000km) & will wear the last one when he starts IAT trail.
IBEX: Zepher Sports L/S & Echo Sports L/S – He’s so impressed by the durability and superb body-temp control as well as odor control & comfort.
