When you imagine what a hiking boot should be, the Sundowner is the vision that comes to mind. The longevity and fan loyalty of this style is no fluke; the simplicity, function and elegance of this hiker may very well be boot nirvana.

UPPER

One piece, USA-tanned, 2.4 mm S.B. Foot leather upper is the ultimate in durability and comfort. Less seams equal fewer hotspots and the longer you wear them, the more custom the fit becomes. A Gore-Tex® membrane protects from inclement conditions, and classic d-ring eyelets are tried and true and offer speed lacing. New for 2015, the Sundowner will be built around the original shaped last, for the classic fit so many have trusted on the trail.

SOLE

Once again, the Sundowner is offered in the original rubber traction sole with polyurethane midsole. This combination is a perfect blend of trail support and comfort for long miles. Vasque’s proprietary Pyrenees rubber sole takes direct design cues from the original, with aggressive lug pattern, excellent mud clearing and rockered heel for a natural foot transition on trails. The single density polyurethane midsole is coupled with a PU comfort footbed for excellent torsional structure for rough trails while offering great underfoot comfort for long days out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Vasque Changed Sizing I’ve been wearing Sundowner’s for years and they are hard to break in, but that’s not the issue. Last buy was a 10.5W and they were too big, so this time, I bought a 10W and they felt small, but I just thought they needed to be broken in, like always, but they never got comfortable and still felt small. Turns out, they changed the design and they actually ARE SMALLER! When I contacted Vasque customer relations, they basically told me to pound sand. This is a direct quote from email: “We recently redesigned the Sundowner using the original Italian inspired design. That did cause the boots to become a bit more narrow and snug. Unfortunately, we only offer exchanges and returns on our product within 30 days of purchase, and the boots must be un-worn. Please let me know if you have any further questions.” Now I have a pair of $219 boots that hurt my feet and do not fit, even if I wear dress socks. BUYER BEWARE!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from New pair of Sundowner GTX I have been reading all the reviews on the Sundowner GTX. There are good reviews on the 1st version of the Italian made Sundowner and super bad reviews on the 2nd generation of China made, it breaks easily. Lately, I have been reading mixed reviews on the 3rd generation of Vietnam made. However, I wanted a pair of Sundowner for a long time and decide to purchased it off Amazon for the Christmas ’18. I always wanted a pair of lasting leather boots. My previous pair of Timberlands boots lasts me almost 9 years, re-sole multiple times. Reading off the web, I was advised to purchase a size bigger for Vasque. I took the advised and purchased it with a size 8W. When the boots arrived, it fit nicely, but the 8W, it doesn’t feel like it is wide. However, it still feels comfortable. Before I wore the shoes, I applied a layer of Obenauf’s heavy duty LP, it waterproofs the leather and made it slightly soft. I would call my trusty leather oil. Blisters and pain will always accompany with a good pair of boots and it will take time for the boots to conform to the feet’s, the way one moves and etc. I have been in the army before and when dealing with leather boots, you have to take a little bit of time. This is my first week, and I have blisters as expected and a bit tight on the ankle. At present, it is the first couple of days wearing these boots, so I have put everything on average on the review. I will be wearing these boots on every day for about 5-7 km walk. I will come back in 6 months time and see how this boots fair.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Eyelet digging into ankle....bad warranty I had a pair of classic Sundowners that were comfortable and rock solid for many years. I read many reviews before buying another pair, due to the years of poor China made boots. Finally bought a pair 2yrs ago and have barely worn them. The top metal eyelets dig into my ankles, making the boots unwearable. They're either spaced poorly or the tongue is too narrow to provide padding from them. I'm an active guy and understand the breaking in process, but these just aren't good boots. I contacted customer support and the reply was basically...."Sorry, but you're out of warranty." Well, that was $200 wasted. Won't buy Vasques again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dissatisfied Ive been wearing Vasque for 15 years...im on my fourth pair and I’m sorry to say quality has gone away. After 14 months the foot bed is broken and the sole is almost bare. Every time I walk my shoe clicks. I think I will start looking for another shoe.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fit, poor quality control. Just purchased two pairs of sundowners. These in my opinion are iconic winter/fall boot. I ordered the Hawthorne and Brown ones. The leather quality of both is superb. However the taning on the Browns one very different. I have tried using mink oil to try to blend in the colors but it will not take. Very disappointed as it looks like I'm wearing two different shoes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Didn’t last long I have owned many Sundowners since the 90s. I buy them from Red Wing store, and I love taking them into the store periodically for a free polish and new laces when needed. They are really comfortable, and until recently, have lasted many years. The last pair I bought was in 2016 and I assumed I would get at least 4 years of hunting and hiking like I have with previous pairs. This fall, an early snow storm caught us by surprise. It shouldn’t have been a problem until my feet started to get cold and I realized my socks were soaking wet. After inspecting the boots closely I noticed the sole pulling away from the leather. Around the front of the boot, the soles have almost come completely off. These are definitely not like the old boots that lasted much longer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fit small First off, like many others, I owned a pair of Sundowners in the 1990’s. They were bought in college at a locally owned outdoor store. The only hiking I did in them was from one side of the fraternity house to the other and then across campus for classes. I loved those old boots. I wore them for anything outdoors all the way up until 2017 when the sole finally fell off. I chunked them. This year I got into hiking and planned a trip on the AT. I needed boots (I thought) So I ordered a new pair of Sundowners, hoping they would be like my old ones. I just completed a 5 day section hike on the AT in the mountains of North Georgia. They quality is definitely good. I have had them now for a year and done a lot of 8-9 mile hikes. They have held up great. Good materials were used. The only problem I have is that they do fit a tad snug. I don’t think it is the length. It is the toe box. The ceiling is very low. If Vasque will listen to their customers they will open this up a bit. Not a big deal but when you are hiking down hill it is uncomfortable. Not bad enough to quit wearing them. Just kind of uncomfortable. With all this said, these things performed great. Tough as nails.
