When you imagine what a hiking boot should be, the Sundowner is the vision that comes to mind. The longevity and fan loyalty of this style is no fluke; the simplicity, function and elegance of this hiker may very well be boot nirvana.

UPPER

One piece, USA-tanned, 2.4 mm S.B. Foot leather upper is the ultimate in durability and comfort. Less seams equal fewer hotspots and the longer you wear them, the more custom the fit becomes. A Gore-Tex® membrane protects from inclement conditions, and classic d-ring eyelets are tried and true and offer speed lacing. New for 2015, the Sundowner will be built around the original shaped last, for the classic fit so many have trusted on the trail.

SOLE

Once again, the Sundowner is offered in the original rubber traction sole with polyurethane midsole. This combination is a perfect blend of trail support and comfort for long miles. Vasque’s proprietary Pyrenees rubber sole takes direct design cues from the original, with aggressive lug pattern, excellent mud clearing and rockered heel for a natural foot transition on trails. The single density polyurethane midsole is coupled with a PU comfort footbed for excellent torsional structure for rough trails while offering great underfoot comfort for long days out.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dissatisfied Ive been wearing Vasque for 15 years...im on my fourth pair and I’m sorry to say quality has gone away. After 14 months the foot bed is broken and the sole is almost bare. Every time I walk my shoe clicks. I think I will start looking for another shoe.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fit, poor quality control. Just purchased two pairs of sundowners. These in my opinion are iconic winter/fall boot. I ordered the Hawthorne and Brown ones. The leather quality of both is superb. However the taning on the Browns one very different. I have tried using mink oil to try to blend in the colors but it will not take. Very disappointed as it looks like I'm wearing two different shoes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Didn’t last long I have owned many Sundowners since the 90s. I buy them from Red Wing store, and I love taking them into the store periodically for a free polish and new laces when needed. They are really comfortable, and until recently, have lasted many years. The last pair I bought was in 2016 and I assumed I would get at least 4 years of hunting and hiking like I have with previous pairs. This fall, an early snow storm caught us by surprise. It shouldn’t have been a problem until my feet started to get cold and I realized my socks were soaking wet. After inspecting the boots closely I noticed the sole pulling away from the leather. Around the front of the boot, the soles have almost come completely off. These are definitely not like the old boots that lasted much longer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fit small First off, like many others, I owned a pair of Sundowners in the 1990’s. They were bought in college at a locally owned outdoor store. The only hiking I did in them was from one side of the fraternity house to the other and then across campus for classes. I loved those old boots. I wore them for anything outdoors all the way up until 2017 when the sole finally fell off. I chunked them. This year I got into hiking and planned a trip on the AT. I needed boots (I thought) So I ordered a new pair of Sundowners, hoping they would be like my old ones. I just completed a 5 day section hike on the AT in the mountains of North Georgia. They quality is definitely good. I have had them now for a year and done a lot of 8-9 mile hikes. They have held up great. Good materials were used. The only problem I have is that they do fit a tad snug. I don’t think it is the length. It is the toe box. The ceiling is very low. If Vasque will listen to their customers they will open this up a bit. Not a big deal but when you are hiking down hill it is uncomfortable. Not bad enough to quit wearing them. Just kind of uncomfortable. With all this said, these things performed great. Tough as nails.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My wife loves how thay fit But they fell apart midway through a mild hike on only her 3 outing in them. Vary sad she still loves them i cant believe the sole fell right off... reallly shameful quality

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best boot I ever had! The sundowner is a great boot. Extreme comfort and stability. I have used for hiking and backpacking. Just one problem I notice. Premature breakdown of sole particularly at heal section. I'm hearing China production? Say no more! This is an old story and many have had to learn lessons. Their production is inferior and unless US company puts components under mass spectrometer analysis inspector likely won't catch defects in material.... i.e. inferior rubber or urethane! Not company's fault but must move their great design to more quality production in other country.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Vasque Sundowner I bought these boots in 2016 and they have seen light use, no major hikes. Unfortunately, in this relatively short period of time, the right vibram sole has split open, totally, all the way to the insole. This is not the quality that I have come to enjoy with Vasque boots, especially for the price being paid. Could this be a manufacturing defect with the soles?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from can't return to vasque I know vasque has made an effort to "reboot" the sundowner but after faithfully buying a new pair a few years ago and the sole completely breaking down (separating) in the middle of a backpacking trip I can't see the company rebuilding my trust. Fortunately I have an old pair that I will be having resoled, if I have to replace them I will be looking for something offered by a different company.
